New covers for POWERLESS and KILLING GODS

Whilst promoting Higgs & Soap: Galaxy Delivery, I slyly re-released both Powerless and Killing Gods with new covers (and in the case of Powerless, a full re-edit) just to see how they would fare.

First off, I love the original covers. They were my idea – moody, abstract designs in the chiaroscuro style – that the artist captured perfectly. I wanted something different that would stand out from the other superhero books out there. However, early this year I got to thinking that they weren’t really selling the book. They were perhaps a bit too abstract and didn’t tell potential readers what was going on inside. So I felt I needed to get them re-done – try and keep the tone, but go for something more contemporary and realistic.

So I went back to my cover artist with a new brief for both covers and let’s just say he delivered big time 🙂

Cover Comparison

Of course, the proof is in the pudding. Have they made a difference to sales? Well, with no special advertising whatsoever, book sales quadrupled! Of course, it didn’t hurt that I was promoting Higgs & Soap around this time, so there would have been some cross-promotional traffic checking out my other works. But even so that’s a big jump without me even telling anyone about the new covers at that point.

Whether that sales jump will continue I don’t know, but new cover second week sales are down (not promoting Higgs & Soap as much) but still higher than old cover sales. Obviously it’s far too early to read much into this, but it was great to see that bump and I’ll keep my eye on things over the next month or so.
