I’m glad I didn’t sign up to KDP Select

A few months ago I was considering signing up to KDP Select for Powerless at the same time as the release of Killing Gods. It was so I could have the first book going for free to help promote the release of the sequel. What put me off was the limited time I could have it for free (5 days in 90) and the whole act of keeping it exclusive, thereby decreasing exposure.

Having followed the stats of both book so far, it turns out I have sold almost as many copies of Powerless on iBooks as I have on Amazon! Surprising stat, which means had I gone exclusive I would have lost not just those extra sales, but the extra exposure on another platform.

Of course, I can only truly know in an alternate universe what would have happened had I gone exclusive. Would the free first book have boosted sales of the sequel enough to cover the sales I have made on iBooks by not being exclusive?

The only thing I definitely know is I would have missed gaining some extra fans on iBooks, and since I’m in this for the long term, that would have been a bad outcome.

So, here’s to not being exclusive! 😀
